If you have a general contractor, he must get the permit. If the contractor is the homeowner, then he or she must get the permit.

You will also need to go to the Rutherford County Health Department and get a septic tank layout for your house, mobile home, or business. If you are adding a bedroom to your existing home, you will also need to obtain a new layout. Rutherford County Addressing DepartmentYou will need a full set of building plans if you are building a house or an addition to a house. This includes modular homes, but not mobile homes. We will need these plans before the first inspection can be done. You will need a sketch or picture of the building if it is a storage building, carport, etc.

A few of our contractors build shells to be finished as the homeowner desires. However, this "shell" permit MUST be finished before a homeowner can take over. This requires a final inspection from this department. Please discuss this with the owner of the shell BEFORE you purchase it and BEFORE you try to take over construction of the shell. Be sure to call our office to check on the status of your shell inspections.

Your plans will be reviewed by a Building Inspector and also by the County Planner. The County Planner will check for watersheds, school zones, and flood plains. After his review, you may need to get an additional permit. He will contact you if the need arises.
