Programs Implemented by Sheriff Dan Good

"ARE YOU OKAY"

This Program was implemented in 1992. The purpose of the "ARE YOU OKAY" program is to phone and check on senior citizens everyday and to provide them with peace of mind that someone cares and is available to assist them.

We currently have over 300 citizens who participate in the "ARE YOU OKAY" program and we have the computer capabilities to enroll every citizen in Rutherford County. Local physicians have documented that this program has already saved the lives of over ten of our citizens. With this success, we will continue to work to increase the number of citizens who enrolled in this program.

If you would like more information concerning this program or know of friends, family or neighbors who could benefit from the "ARE YOU OKAY" program, please contact the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department in Rutherfordton, North Carolina.

***The Rutherford County Firefighters Association is providing smoke detectors for the homes of our seniors and Beacon Blanket Company is providing blankets for Rutherford County senior citizens who are in need.***

"SHERIFF'S INMATE LABOR"

This program was implemented for the purpose of assisting Rutherford County citizens in keeping their roads and communities clean. Any individual who is a misdemeanor, non-violent offender and receives an active jail sentence, will participate in this program, which includes picking up trash, cleaning roadsides and community buildings.

The inmates participating in this program will be supervised by Sheriff's Deputies and will work between three and six days per week. This program will allow inmates to work and repay their debt to society and send a message that if you serve jail time in Rutherford County, you will be required to work at physical labor and not simply enjoy a vacation at the expense of the taxpayers.

"CHILD ABUSE RESPONSE TEAM"

Recently, we implemented a program for the purpose of localizing all child abuse reports. With the cooperation of the Department of Social Services, Child Medical Examiners, Court Advocates, Family Resources and the District Attorney's Office, we work vigorously to investigate all child abuse reports.

Working closely with all concerned agencies ensures prompt investigation and reduces the trauma for victims and their families, The Rutherford County Sheriff's Department has an officer assigned to investigate child abuse cases. I assure that our department will work diligently to provide a safe environment for our children.

"CRIMESTOPPERS"

Crimestoppers of Rutherford County is a program established for the purpose of obtaining information about criminal activity and fugitive felons. Crimestoppers is a community project supported totally by donations, not by county taxes.

Does Crimestoppers work? You bet it does! We have had over 500 calls reporting crimes or fugitives, with over 165 arrests as a result of this program. Over $4,000 of reward money has been presented to Crimestopper participants.

**Crimestoppers has recovered over $50,000 in stolen goods, cash and illegal drugs. Furthermore, Crimestoppers has been directly responsible for arresting murderers and a host of other serious criminals.

"OPERATION ID"

In 1991, with the assistance of the Henderson County Sheriff's Department, we implemented the B7E Task Force. This program is designed to open communications between surrounding counties and provide local law enforcement with much needed assistance in solving property crimes.

Establishing good communication networks with other law enforcement departments has resulted in numerous arrest and seizure of several thousand dollars of stolen property. In order to decrease the incidence of property crimes, a consolidated effort is necessary and the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department is once again leading the effort in this fight.

Presently, there are six surrounding western North Carolina Counties and three upstate South Carolina Counties participating in our task force.

"K-9 PROGRAM"

In 1991 the Canine Program was started by purchasing a drug detecting dog. Since that time we have used the "K-9" program for drug confiscations, tracking fleeing suspects, searching buildings, officer protection and many public awareness demonstrations.

The "K-9" program has proven to be a successful addition to the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department. With the success of this program, it has been expanded to include a bloodhound, for the purposes of tracking and locating individuals who are missing or are wanted fugitives.

"EMERGENCY COMMAND CENTER"

Contains the most modern, updated communications equipment and mapping system. Is to be used in the event of any type emergency, county wide. The Command Center is available to municipalities and the Emergency Management Coordinator.

"HELICOPTER PROGRAM"

The Department has acquired three (3) OH8A Military Surplus Helicopters. The upkeep of these is costing the taxpayers of Rutherford County nothing. All maintenance, fuel, hanger space is paid for strictly by donated funds.

There are two (2) experienced pilots that "Volunteer" their time to fly missions and keep the Helicopters maintained.
