What You Can Recycle & Where

In Rutherford County, the County Convenience Centers take:
1. Newspaper
2. Glass - clear, green, and brown (separate)
3. Plastic with numbers 1 or 2 (mixed)
4. Aluminum containers. It is against State law to put aluminum cans in the “trash.” (No aluminum foil.)
5. Cardboard boxes, plain or non-gloss printed, flattened
6. Metals, including appliances (mixed)
7. Car batteries
8. Computers and other electronics (check which CCs)

The cities that have curbside pickup will get the following:
Rutherfordton - items 1-5 above.
Forest City - items 1-5 above.
Ellenboro - items 1-5 above.
Bostic - items 1-5 above.
Lake Lure - items 1-5 above.
Ruth - items 1-5 above.
Spindale has a drop-off box at First Baptist Church of Spindale on Wilson St. for items 1-5 above-

Convenience Centers with SWAP SHOPS (place and take “good stuff” for free) are:

5. Pea Ridge

Items you should take to the Solid Waste Transfer Station on Laurel Hill Drive
1. Tires
2. Construction and Demolition waste

Just because a company says it’s “green” doesn’t mean it is. Generally you should ignore the name of the product and the graphics and look for details in the small print. You can look for independent certification at these sites:
