SEPTEMBER 2009
Attendance: David Cameron, Susan los Calzo, Robin Wiggins, Frank Chyz, Rachael Hensley, Steve Nanney, Emily Walker, Barbara Miliski, Richard Burke, Marty Hopper, Brian Deck, Milagros Blanco, Bernard Blanco, Bill Coxe, Patricia Kuess
1) August Minutes approved as written.
2) Pro-Tainers have been delivered to GDS and were moved to the 3 High Schools the next day. Plasticized signs to identify which bins hold what are made and will go on the containers.
3) The Recycling Specialist position has not been advertised yet. David and 2 Human Resources people will meet to okay the ad.
4) Orders are in progress for bins, roll-outs and more Clear-Streams. Also identification stickers.
5) We will have about $3000 left after these expenditures. This money will be used to: 1. The Recycling Specialist will need an expense account. 2. Damaged items will need to be replaced. 3. Additional signs and stickers will have to be ordered. 4. More Clear-Stream bags will need to be ordered.
We have this money thanks to the generous check given to SWEEP from our good neighbor WAL-MART. We are grateful to WAL-MART for their continued support of SWEEP and our projects. Susan will write a thank you note.
6) The “One Page” diagram outlining recycling is ready for distribution. All school principals have a copy.
7) Report from Frank: 15 Clear-Streams were well used at the Special Olympics event. At the HOT CARS/COOL Rides event all Clear Streams were used and he could have used 50 more. He showed us 2 large COKE logo recycling bins that are very eye-catching. They will be added to Clear-Streams at public events and should be very well utilized.
8) Frank will take care of getting Clear-Streams to Spindale’s Festival on September 19th. Our booth got destroyed by wind at McNair Field so we won’t have a booth. This will be replaced as an expense in our next budget, a booth with a better design.
9) Conservation Field Day is September 30th. David will set up and take the first shift. Patricia will take the second shift and Rachael, the third. Frank will see to it that Clear-Streams are there. We will see what “give-aways” we have for the children.
10) Richard’s report: A grant is available from the Department of Pollution Control to buy Roll-outs. Funds are not available now due to the economy, but maybe by the end of the year. Richard will “stay tuned” for developments.
11) Our website needs to be updated. The calendar of events needs to include meeting dates.
12) Notification of new “Plastic Law” needs to happen at Convenience Centers. Plastic #’s 1 – 7 can be recycled.
13) Richard says there is a grant ($1000) to recycle old and/or abandoned trailers, single-wide and located within city limits. This is brand new money. He will find out more about this Grant.
14) SWEEP has not received money from the OWLS auction yet. He will check on this.
15) Regarding schools keeping the money they generate in recycling, David will ask if he needs to go to a Commissioner’s meeting to petition for this to happen.
16) Clear-Streams will be needed at the LeeAnn Rhymes concert, Relay 4 Life, and 3 Home ball games, all held on the same day. Frank will take charge of this.
17) NEW BUSINESS:
Susan suggested more education is needed, more information given to CC attendants regarding what can go into SWAP SHOPS, what can be thrown out, etc. Steve said the attendant job is more difficult than it appears because threats have been made when attendants tell patrons where to put stuff, where not to put it. Terry James is the supervisor of attendants, and the suggestion remained that whatever pressure can be applied to attendants to be more alert should happen from the top. There are rules already made but they are not being enforced as clothes are appearing in SWAP SHOPS, and the 1 in Gilkey is filthy.
Susan asked Jerry Searcy if mixed paper could go in the newspaper ONLY bins at CC’s. The answer is ‘No.’ However this is being discussed. We want a vendor with the kind of equipment that can make pulp from mixed paper, which is more difficult than just using newspaper.
